Dr. Ben McVane presented at the International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims-Independent Forensic Expert Group Fall Webinar on October 14. The webinar focused on the challenges and best practices when providing tele-evaluations of patients during the COVID-19 pandemic as in-person evaluations continue to pose a danger to both providers and patients.

Dr. Fernando was a faculty member and presenter for the eight-week virtual course, “Beyond Burnout: A New Approach to Self-Care during the COVID-19 Pandemic,” offered from October to December. The course was designed for staff in torture treatment programs to simultaneously learn and practice a variety of self-care techniques, and to provide resources to help staff process the challenges of their work during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Sheena Singh presented her research on the experiences and resulting needs of LGBTQ torture survivors served by the Libertas Center. NARHC, the North American Refugee Health Conference, was held virtually September 17-19.
Libertas’ Dr. Ben McVane participated in a panel discussion on the Northern Triangle at the NARHC virtual conference held September 17-19. Dr. McVane discussed the needs and challenges of health care provision at the U.S.-Mexico border to patients from the Northern Triangle.
Three Libertas staff members - Maya, Program Manager, Sara, Program Coordinator, and Ben, Senior Medical Educator - attended the discussion hosted by the New York Immigration Coalition on August 13. The NYIC Roundtable brings Coalition members together each year to set policy and program priorities for the future. As a Coalition member, Libertas has a say in the NYIC’s organizational goals concerning civil and immigrant rights, public health, economic opportunity, and more, which are crucial to protecting the future of New York City’s immigrant communities.
