Led by Dr. McVane, the Libertas Center conducted a half-day training in September on the Forensic Medical/Mental Health Evaluation of Torture Survivors, including a legal and social overview, attended by nearly 20 Emergency Medicine and Pediatrics Attendings and Residents.
Dr. Fernando Presents at the United Nations
In April of 2019, Dr. Fernando was invited to present on the medical care of sexual and gender-based violence survivors at the United Nations Expert Panel and Workshop in Geneva on “Surviving Torture and Fighting Stigma: The Road to Recovery for Victims of Sexual and Gender-based Torture.” The two-day workshop held in April brought together 23 professionals from various backgrounds (medical, psychological, social and legal) and 3 survivors to share best practices and identify effective responses to challenges in redress for and rehabilitation of survivors of sexual and gender-based torture.
